Orchid Male Cancer Awareness Week 2009
From the 20-26 April 2009 Orchid will be raising the profile of testicular, prostate and penile cancer

Orchid Male Cancer Awareness Week 2009 marks the start of an annual campaign to raise awareness of male specific cancers. Every year over 37,000 men will be diagnosed with testicular, prostate or penile cancer. Yet given the figures there is still limited knowledge of these cancers amongst the general public. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment can make a difference, helping to increase survival rates and ultimately save men’s lives. And everyone has a role to play – whether they are a wife or partner, family member or friend, healthcare professional or employer.
Starting with practical advice and information on detection, diagnosis and treatment, the campaign will look at the role of partners and loved ones in the cancer journey, employer and employee involvement, people’s own experiences of male cancer and the role of healthcare professionals.
During the Week we’ll be running information days, talking to journalists, launching new information factsheets and of course raising much needed money through fundraising events.
Our messages will include:
  • Male cancers need to be talked about, better understood and supported
  • Everyone should be aware of the possible signs and symptoms of prostate, penile and testicular cancer
  • A range of people are involved in the cancer journey and play a key role in the care, well being and ultimately the outcome for the person with cancer
  • A diagnosis of cancer doesn’t just affect one person… it affects family, friends and colleagues too
  • Research developments: what research has achieved to date and what we can expect to see in the future
There are lots of ways you can get involved...
You can get your company, sports clubs, local pub, friends and family supporting the Week by putting up posters, giving out leaflets and running an Orchid information stand – all our materials are free.
You can raise funds for Orchid. Put a collection box in your office or pub, get sponsored, run a coffee morning, organise a dinner or dance.
And finally – we want everyone to support our Postcard Campaign. Orchid is launching a bold and catchy Postcard Campaign telling people about male cancer and how to get information, help and support. We’re getting thousands of these printed and we want everyone to give them out! Put them in your office, the gents loos, sports clubs, pubs, health centres, the local DIY store, garages, pharmacies and shops. You can also feature the postcard campaign and logo on your homepage or intranet site or use it in your emails!
