Male cancer charity Orchid has funded research that shows how prostate cancer, typically diagnosed in men over 55, is present in 30% of men between the ages of 16 and 40. Local boy and ex national one Rugby Player Jerry Shedden is today launching an initiative to raise awareness of testicular cancer in all schools across the county as part of a nationwide programme by the Orchid Cancer Appeal. The number of men with testicular cancer in the UK has more than doubled since 1971 and over 1,440 cases are diagnosed each year.

March 2007: Ipswich teenager Stefan Cawston owes a lot to male cancer charity Orchid – in fact, his life. Like too many young men, the 18 year old ignored a lump on his testicle for 12 months before being rushed to hospital after collapsing in February 2006. 2 weeks earlier, Stefan had started feeing dizzy and getting black outs and nausea. He couldn’t eat anything due to tumours pressing on his stomach but, even so, he was still playing rugby.
